As expected, Mikhail Grigorenko signed an entry level contract with the Buffalo Sabres this past Wednesday. Grigorenko’s 3-year deal at $1,750,00 per year is just $150,000 more than Zemgus Girgensons’ contract which he signed late last week. Given that Grigorenko is an extremely talented forward who was slotted to be taken within the top three according to many draft rankings, it is expected that he will certainly be striving to make the 2012-2013 Buffalo Sabres roster. Grigorenko’s inconsistency throughout the past year caused concern for many scouts and teams, plaguing him as lazy and unmotivated. This idea contributed to his decline in the draft order to 12th, right into the hands of the Buffalo Sabres. It later surfaced that Grigorenko was diagnosed and battling mono during the playoffs, just after an ankle injury throughout the World Junior Championships. It would be hard to look at his performance throughout the past season and not take into account these factors. At 6’3″ and 180 lbs., Grigorenko is a bigger center than the Sabres have been previously used to. He handles the puck extremely well and is also difficult to knock off the puck. Classified as a playmaker, he is an ideal candidate [...]

Zemgus Girgensons, the second player drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2012 draft, originally intended to go to college at the University of Vermont in the fall. The 18-year old center was drafted 14th overall, just two spots after Mikhail Grigorenko, another center. Given that Girgensons had committed to the Vermont Catamounts, if he signed an NHL contract, he would be unable to attend the school in the Fall. At the NHL draft in Pittsburgh however, it appeared Girgensons’ loyalty was with UVM and signing a contract with the Sabres would not be likely. His hockey status in the fall was a topic of many interviews during Buffalo Sabres Development Camp, which after the last day, Girgensons announced he would be talking with Darcy Regier regarding his decision. That decision ended up as a three-year entry level contract worth a maximum $925,000 per year. Now, the options that lie ahead of Girgensons are: Playing in the NHL Playing in the AHL Playing in the AHL, but if he struggles, going to the WHL and unable to return to the AHL until he turns 20 on January 5th, 2014 More than likely, we will be seeing Girgensons start his pro-hockey [...]

We are currently 31 hours into free agency and while the big names (Zach Parise, Ryan Suter, Shea Weber, Rick Nash, and Bobby Ryan to name a few) are still floating around as potential trades or unrestricted free agents, the Buffalo Sabres have made a few moves. After doing quite well in the draft with picking up Mikhail Grigorenko and Zemgus Girgensons in the first round, the Sabres have dabbled into free agency signing John Scott, and grabbing Steve Ott and Adam Pardy in a trade for Derek Roy. Yes, the same Derek Roy that has “no value”, would be traded for soup, and isn’t worth anything more than picks. By the way, I’m not even going to pretend I’ve followed the prospects and know them through and through — I highly recommend you visit Sabres Prospects. Kris Baker is phenomenal. You won’t regret adding that to your daily bookmarks. If you’re like me, you wondered a little bit about John Scott when the news broke yesterday. In the words of Eric from 3rd Man In: He’s a big slob who can beat the shit out of anyone and everyone. Emphasize big. Can’t skate a regular shift.” Despite a need [...]

Today, the basement dwellers of the Buffalo Sabres variety occupied the Buffalo Sabres locker room for yet another Blogger Summit with Ted Black and various other Sabres personnel. Some blogs represented (and forgive me, because I will forget some of the fifteen others that were in attendance) were Die by the Blade, Black, Blue, and Gold, Sabre Noise, Two in the Box, 3rd Man In, The Hosers, plus many more. More than likely, you’ll be able to check out their more detailed recaps, but here’s a quick run-down. Once again, the Sabres staff set up and provided an incredibly welcoming and information experience from start to finish. Of course, one way to get to the heart of us basement people (as Ted Black referred to more than once, without quite knowing what to call us and not wanting to be offensive), is free beer and La Nova pizza so the happy hour did not hurt. Though Michael Gilbert and Ted Black wandered through the happy hour and visited with each table to mingle and chat prior to the official summit. Within the hour, we all were directed to the Sabres locker room, where a sort of press conference style set-up [...]

It’s the time of year where the Buffalo Sabres and Ted Black are holding another Blogger Summit. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, I attended one earlier this year. Some topics that will almost certainly be on the discussion board are game presentation and atmosphere, season ticket holder perks, plans for canal side, free agency, as well as topics related to the Rochester Americans and Blue Cross Arena. Given that the summit is expected to be around three hours, plenty more will be covered in this event than the previous one this year. If there is anything you’re dying to suggest or inquire about, make sure you let myself (or any other Buffalo Sabres blogger) know. This is a great opportunity to get your questions directly to Ted Black and the organization. Check back after Monday, June 11th for a recap of the summit!
